The Farmers Market delivers more than fresh food to Tempe.
Experience Matters Encore Fellow, Cindy Gentry, was instrumental in bringing the Tempe Community Market to life. Along the way you could say she got a fresh start, too!
After receiving a grant to bring a farmer’s market to the community, based on the lack of grocery stores in some areas of the City, TCAA looked to Experience Matters to help. TCAA, a nonprofit organization whose mission is to serve the underserved in our community, needed expertise to find local growers and knowledge to coordinate the market. Cindy, who had recently retired, was looking for a challenge and has more than 30 years of experience in local food systems.
After one solid year of work, the Tempe Community Market (TCM) held its grand opening on Sunday, March 23, 2014 and is now open for business every Sunday. TCM supports and fosters local agriculture by providing a direct market for producers, giving consumers an opportunity to purchase locally produced agricultural goods, and educating the community about the importance of local agriculture. Tools to grow your own food – that’s just a bonus!
On any given Sunday, you’ll find Cindy among the stalls at the market browsing the fresh produce, taking in our fabulous Arizona weather and enjoying the sense of community that a farmers market brings.
“Without Experience Matters and their expertise in finding the right match, the market never would have happened.”
– Stephen Sparks, Interim Executive Director, TCAA
